In Memoriam: Roger Beckett

National Association of Scholars

Roger Beckett, executive director of the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University and a longtime member of the National Association of Scholars, passed away on September 14, 2018. He was 44 years old.

Roger was a champion of civics—in its traditional sense—and a scholar who inspired others to take great books and great texts seriously. Under his guidance, the Ashbrook Center stood apart from the rise of the “new civics” and instilled in students an understanding of the structures and institutions that undergird freedom.

Roger graduated from Ashland University in 1996 and received a Master of Arts in Social Studies Education from The Ohio State University. He received the James Madison Award from the Ashbrook Scholar Program and received a Mentor Award from Ashland University.

The National Association of Scholars mourns his passing.
