Telling It Like It Is

George Leef

Professor Christina Hoff Sommers has written a wonderful review of Andrew Ferguson’s new book Crazy U. Both the book and the review tell it like it is with regard to higher education. Far from being “the envy of the world,” our higher education system is overrun with waste and folly. Capitalizing on the notion that having a college degree (any degree, in anything) is essential for personal and financial success, college leaders have continuously raised the price of their product while allowing the quality to atrophy. Yet our political leaders insist that we need to “invest” more in higher ed so we can lead the world in the percentage of the population with higher ed credentials. This is one of the great boondoggles of our time.
