FIRE VP to Freshman Parents: College Ain't What It Used to Be

Glenn Ricketts

If you're the proud parent of an entering freshman this Fall semester, FIRE Vice President Robert Shibley has some advice that you may not have heard from your school's orientation team leader. Speech and harassment codes, often hard for many parents to imagine, are virtually ubiquitous in the contemporary academy, and I hope Bob's observations reach the target readership.

It needn't be a spoiler but, as he says, a vastly different collegiate landscape than the one you remember probably awaits your son or daughter. It's not heartwarming news, but far better to know in advance than to learn by stepping on an ideological landmine further down the road.
