Ian Oxnevad on China's "Transnational Repression"

An Interview with the Hudson Institute

National Association of Scholars

In a conversation hosted by the Hudson Institute on July 20, 2023, Levi Browde, executive director of the Falun Dafa Information Center; Olivia Enos, Washington director of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation; Ian Oxnevad, senior fellow for foreign affairs and security studies at the National Association of Scholars; and Ying Chen, conductor with Shen Yun Performing Arts, joined Hudson Center for Religious Freedom Director Nina Shea to discuss China’s transnational repression of freedom of thought and speech.

"Confucius Institues were a problem, we found out, because they're propaganda centers ... We actually found four main problems in our first report, in terms of how Confucius Institutes erode educational sovreignty and constitutional protections of the U.S. ... Confucius Institutes offered China a base within a number of American universities by which to conduct a number of operations."
