This summer we introduced our readers to a new membership organization that shares ideals with NAS. The Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) seeks to address Middle Eastern and African studies through open inquiry, rigorous scholarship, and pursuit of the truth.
As a reminder, ASMEA is holding its annual conference next month in Washington, D.C., on "The Middle East and Africa: Historic Connections and Strategic Bridges." The conference still has seats available.
NAS is excited about what ASMEA is doing in this field in which serious scholars have been under-represented in recent decades, and we hope our members and readers take the opportunity to join the conversation started by this important organization.

A preliminary version of the schedule for ASMEA’s 2009 Annual Conference—The Middle East and Africa: Historic Connections and Strategic Bridges—is now available on our website.
The conference will feature presentations that demonstrate the inter-relationships between the two regions over time with special emphasis on the historical, political, economic, religious, security and cultural links between them.

On top of the normally heavy volume of tourists in the Washington, DC area, a large numbers of visitors are expected in town for the Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 25th.
