Middle East and Africa Scholars Meet Next Month

Ashley Thorne

This summer we introduced our readers to a new membership organization that shares ideals with NAS. The Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) seeks to address Middle Eastern and African studies through open inquiry, rigorous scholarship, and pursuit of the truth.

As a reminder, ASMEA is holding its annual conference next month in Washington, D.C., on "The Middle East and Africa: Historic Connections and Strategic Bridges." The conference still has seats available.

NAS is excited about what ASMEA is doing in this field in which serious scholars have been under-represented in recent decades, and we hope our members and readers take the opportunity to join the conversation started by this important organization.

For details about the conference, see below, and for further information, see ASMEA's website

A preliminary version of the schedule for ASMEA’s 2009 Annual Conference—The Middle East and Africa: Historic Connections and Strategic Bridges—is now available on our website.

The conference will feature presentations that demonstrate the inter-relationships between the two regions over time with special emphasis on the historical, political, economic, religious, security and cultural links between them.

Along with the academic paper presentations, ASMEA's 2009 conference will feature special presentations by:

  •  ASMEA Chairman Bernard Lewis
  • Dennis Ross, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for the Central Region
  •  John Bolton, Former United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations and former Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security
  • Gerard Prunier, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris
  • General William E. "Kip" Ward, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (invited)

View the entire schedule (subject to change) here.

On top of the normally heavy volume of tourists in the Washington, DC area, a large numbers of visitors are expected in town for the Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 25th. In light of this, we encourage you to make your travel plans to Washington, DC for our conference as soon as possible. To assist you in this matter, we have put together some helpful travel resources for your visit to Washington, DC.
