The Bowdoin Project Arrives

Michael Toscano

“Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, That there be erected and established in the town of Brunswick, in the District of Maine, a College for the purpose of educating youth, to be called and known by the name of Bowdoin College…”

The Charter of Bowdoin College, the General Court of Massachusetts, 1794

The Bowdoin Project is here! Since September 2011, NAS has been conducting an in-depth, ethnographic study of Bowdoin College in Maine. We asked, “what does Bowdoin teach?” and examined Bowdoin’s formal curriculum, its residential and student life policies, and its co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. We have dedicated a page on our website to the Bowdoin Project. The full report will be published there in April. In the meantime, we will be posting a series of Preliminaries which will provide context for the report. Our first Preliminary, “Before We Report: The Origins of the Study,” provides an account of the circumstances and questions which led to the commencement of the Bowdoin Project to begin with.
