Sir Hugh Lloyd-Jones (1922-2009)

Ashley Thorne

The National Association of Scholars mourns the passing of Sir Hugh Lloyd-Jones (1922-2009), who served as a member of our Board of Advisors along with his wife Mary Lefkowitz. Lloyd-Jones was a valiant defender of the Classics. He studied Literae Humaniores at Oxford was the Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford University from 1960-1989. He was knighted when he retired from the Regius chair.

The London Times called him “one of the liveliest and most celebrated Greek scholars of the past half century.” We take this moment to commemorate his legacy and extend our sympathy to his family.
