I happened to see this news item from the Guardian earlier in the month, announcing the demise of the Queen’s English Society.
Prior to reading this, I wasn’t aware that such a society existed, although I can certainly endorse its mission (or it’s mission, as I see more often than not) to “become the recognised guardian of proper English.” Contemporary English, heaven knows, certainly needs a guardian of some sort, since that function was long ago abdicated by educators at every level.
Unfortunately, as the Guardian report indicates, QES isn’t folding because proper English now reigns supreme as a result of its efforts over the last four decades. But let’s give them a round for trying, at least.
