Scholarship Opportunities for Grad and Undergrad Students

Keri Anderson

NAS wants to help ambitious young scholars advance their academic careers. Many of our members are either graduate students or know graduate students involved in research in fields such as economics, philosophy, law, political science, anthropology, and literature. This announcement presents an excellent opportunity for them.

Graduate students and undergrads: have you heard about the Humane Studies Fellowships (HSF) sponsored by the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS)? The program offers scholarships of up to $15,000 to graduate students and advanced undergraduates pursuing a career in academia. Last year they awarded more than $650,000 to 190 recipients, and plan to increase the number of fellowships in the coming year.

Eligible candidates should be enrolled full time and be working on academic research that explores the principles, practices, and institutions necessary to a free society.

Select winners are invited to present and discuss their research at the annual Humane Studies Research Colloquium and attend other colloquia throughout the year. Fellows also join a growing network of over 10,000 IHS academics who are committed to the ideas of liberty and intellectual freedom.

For more information, visit http://www.TheIHS.org/HSF2011. The deadline to apply is December 31.

Past HSF Winners include Volokh Conspiracy bloggers Todd Zywicki, Sasha Volokh, Randy Barnett, Ilya Somin, and David Bernstein.

Recent winners hail from a variety of disciplines and are working on topics such as:

  • The role of property rights and entrepreneurship in developing countries
  • The Scottish Enlightenment response to criticisms of commercial society
  • The relationship between utopianism and liberalism
  • The concept of civility in 17th Century Anglo-American political thought
  • The economics of healthcare policy
  • How property rights regimes affect natural resources allocation
