Remembering Amy Kass

National Association of Scholars

It is with sadness that we at NAS share the news that our long-time member and colleague Amy Kass has passed away. Amy embodied many of the qualities that NAS seeks to uphold and extend. As a teacher she cared deeply for her students’ souls, not just their choices or lifestyles. As an author and speaker she consistently sought to renew readers’ interests in perennial questions while also not shying away from informing and elevating current debate. Through studies in Homer and Tocqueville, courtship and citizenship, philosophy and philanthropy, she reminded us that scholarship need not mean narrow specialization. She lived fully as ‘human being and citizen,’ and we are grateful to have known her.
