Updated July 20, 2023—The National Association of Scholars (NAS) and the Civics Alliance work around the nation to reform education. Sometimes we work on the national level, such as our efforts to reform federal policy toward Confucius Institutes, our amicus curiae briefs, or our work to reform the College Board. Sometimes we work on the local level, such as our open letters to college presidents in support of persecuted faculty. Yet much of our work, and many of our collaborations, take place at the state level. This map, which we will update regularly, records a good deal of our reform labors.
With the rise of mandated diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, unchecked foreign funding in American higher education, and more, it’s our priority to help American institutions of higher education uphold their institutional integrity, and intellectual and academic freedom.
The NAS is working to defend academic freedom for faculty, students, and others, along with preserving the liberal arts and promoting institutional neutrality. It is through the efforts listed on the map above, as well as policy advocacy and reports, that we have shed light on many of the harmful trends in higher education, and given state lawmakers and college administrators the tools to act.
