One Way to Promote Intellectual Diversity

George Leef

In this Minding the Campus essay, Bob Weissberg suggests that one means of promoting intellectual diversity among college and university professors would be to eliminate the monopoly position that scholarly books and journals have with respect to publications that "count" towards tenure. That could be accomplished, he contends, by eliminating "hard copies of all scholarly journals, even books, and 'publish' everything, no exceptions, on the Internet." The key benefit: "Ideologues accustomed to killing off any hint of racism, sexism, homophobia, classism and similar crimes against today's orthodoxy are now rendered powerless."
