NAS and CSWE

On 11 February 2008, NAS President Steve Balch sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to draw attention to unconstitutional practices within the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the sole accreditor of social work programs in the United State. Specifically, CSWE violates the First Amendment in its ideological prerequisites (such as requiring students to endorse particular political and philosophic ideas); and it violates the Fourteenth Amendment in the racial quotas employed in its elections. NAS requests that HHS persuade CSWE to modify its standards or else disqualify it from its gatekeeper role in social work accreditation.
