Mandatory Social Justice at Smith College?

Glenn Ricketts

It certainly looks as if it’s coming soon, if you read this interview with Smith’s academic provost in the Sophian.   Students have been asking for it, she says, and faculty members want it, so it’s time to update the curriculum accordingly.

Nothing very surprising there, since Smith has long been in the forefront of “tolerance,” “diversity” and “social justice” in its course offerings and campus policies in general.  All that was missing was a curricular requirement, and now it appears that they’ll be closing that small hole in the near future as well.

As for the content of the anticipated new requirement, you can pretty well guess what it will consist of from the provost’s comments.  Alas, no surprises there either.
