Professor Robert Weissberg has an excellent essay on Minding the Campus in which he examines what he calls "hate facts." Hate facts are truths that must not be spoken among the intelligentsia any more because doing so could offend some "protected" group. Academics (and anyone else who wants to survive in the public realm) learn to steer a safe course away from hate facts.
