College officials often look covetously on large donations intended for particular purposes, thinking "We have better purposes; now if only we could divert some of that money...."
Such a case has played out over the last several years at Trinity College, where the Shelby Cullom Davis Endowment was targeted by an aggressive president. Happily, that battle is over and it was a clear victory for donor intent. In this week's Pope Center Clarion Call, philanthropy expert Martin Morse Wooster explains the circumstances and how the Connecticut Attorney General's office did the right thing in upholding the rule of law.
Oh, and the president was ousted before his contract was up. Then he went on to run Sweet Briar College.
