"Diversity:" How it Might Work Differently

Ethnic and racial diversity among students needn't be a problem on college campuses, argues long-time NAS member Russell Nieli. As he demonstrates in this piece at Minding the Campus, there are indeed previous instances of racial and ethnic mixing that proceded without the tensions and resentment so often found at higher educational institutions these days. The problem there, he argues, is with the underlying assumptions about group interaction that guide most "diversity" policies in college admissions offices. Unfortunately, there's no indication that they'll be changing anytime soon, and neither will the negative experiences so many students associate with them.
